Life is a strange thing

Tricia arrived safe and sound Saturday evening when her flight landed a few minutes earlier than scheduled. I picked her up from the airport as soon as she landed, and we went to Taco Mac for burgers and beers and slept soundly that night.

Giving a slight synopsis here, the weekend was pretty pleasant, what with visiting Augusta for my grandmother’s birthday, but there was a slight hiccup with my car that delayed our return Monday and cost quite a few bills to fix. =/ Such is life.

Last night was pretty… awful. After a relatively okay day, I got home to work on a paper that never seemed to end. Then I got the news that an old friend from TaeKwonDo, Conor Waters, a man who was a mere 7 years older than myself and whom I sparred with consistently back in the day, had… somehow passed away. It struck me pretty solidly – I had only spoken with him last about mid-summer when I ran into him at his job at the PeachMac Store in Augusta, and only Monday afternoon did I run across his business card in my wallet and I said “I should give that guy a call and see if we can play on Xbox Live”. I wish I had called, now. I’ll never get to do that. It’s a sobering, depressing thought. RIP, Conor, you’ll be sorely missed.

It could be that or because I am running off of 4 hours sleep (hardly enough), but I just feel strange and awful. I do not want anything to do with my next classes at all. I want to go home, sleep, play some Animal Crossing, and I don’t want to go to the Phi Kap meeting later tonight. Yuck.

Speaking of Animal Crossing, if anyone appreciates a very dark yet comedic satire based on Animal Crossing, you need to read The Terrible Secret of Animal Crossing. This is a dark, chilling tale. I. Love. It.

I don’t have much more to say right now. I feel pretty listless. Perhaps I’ll have more later. I’m looking forward to listening to some Beatles later and following the news of Apple’s “It’s Only Rock and Roll” Media Event today. Anyway, toodles.

aardvarks and apologies

Fish here, writing for the first time in forever ago. Reason being is that school has started, and I was a busy fellow running and coordinating Rush for my fraternity, beginning classes, juggling a budding social life, rising from the ashes of said social life’s death last spring when I left for the summer. I am pleased to be back in Atlanta, even if it means dealing with some of the difficulties (traffic, homeless, idiots, etc). It’s good to be back.

Another thing one may notice is that I’ve replaced the blog. I had to update my Wordpress installation, which borked itself and I had to restart from scratch. I’m surprised and amazed I remembered HOW to even do it. As a result, though, things may take a bit of tweaking for a few days, but I’m overall very pleased with the new Wordpress (I upgraded from 2.5.1 to the current 2.8.4, so there was a LOT of newness in here for me).

I’m currently sitting in my Shakespeare course watching Morpheus Laurence Fishburne play Othello on the DVD my professor is showing. These stories are always so tragic. =/ This is just one of several classes I’m rather enjoying this semester – I’m taking a course in Interactive Narrative and Fiction, another in Constructing the Moving Image, another in User Interface Design, and another in Ethics in Computing. Very good semester, and all things I’m interested in. :)

My apartment is quite nice and comfortable, but needs a bit more decoration and furniture. I guess that’s why Tricia’s moving in (TOMORROW!) to take care of that sort of thing for me. ;D She’ll enjoy it, and I’m looking so forward to finally having her here – words cannot do my feelings justice.

So I can’t remember if I actually wrote about my new Macbook Pro that I love so very very much. Everything about this magnificent machine is to my exact desires – a 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GBs of DDR3 RAM, and a 320GB HDD for starters. I JUST purchased Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard for only a mere $29 a week ago today, and I’ve seen some significant improvements in the realm of how this computer runs and handles itself. I’m quite pleased overall. I’m now waiting for two dates for Apple-related excitement: September 9th is Apple’s standard media event for the refresh of their iPod line (here is where they typically release a new version of iTunes, hoping for some sweet improvements… maybe 64-bit?), and September 25th, when AT&T finally stopstries to stop failing so fucking hard and grants iPhone owners the ability to MMS-text message pictures for those not in the know. I have some sweet programs for my Mac now too – Things for Mac (and subsequently, Things for iPhone) have made task management and keeping up with things so. much. easier. for me. I’m kinda in love with being able to take a quick glance and see everything that’s due of me. ^_^ I’ve also obtained Adobe’s CS4 Master Collection, which is fantastic for the programs and talents expected of me in my major here at Georgia Tech. Photoshop and Flash will more than likely prove to be far more useful than anything else I can possibly have. I’ve also installed Aperture 2 for my Mac, in preparation for the DSLR I plan to get – Aperture 2 is a photo management and RAW image handler developed and sold by Apple, and it should work wonderfully for my needs. :)

But yes! A DSLR – specifically, the Canon EOS 500D (otherwise known as the Digital Rebel T1i), a fantastic 15 megapixel DSLR camera that also does HD video and has Live View, two neat knick-knacks for a DSLR. Every review I’ve read says this camera is best in its price class and seems perfect for my desires and hobbies. I can’t wait to purchase this camera and develop my photography skills, but I want to sell my current camera before I run off and buy this thing… and I need to find a buyer. Anyone who is interested and reading this, hit me up, PLEASE. :P

I wanted to say more than simply facts or… almost sales-pitchy things in this post, but I suppose I have to get all that out of the way before I go on with other things. I guess those thoughts will come later today though – class is almost over and I should wrap this up. :P So, until later…!

Hold your colors against the wall

I am in for a long day today. It’s about a quarter to 8AM as I write this now, and I’m sitting at work, waiting to be able to clock on. I got here about half an hour early this morning. I guess it was nerves…

You see, I have a phone interview set up today at 5:30PM for a job to work at the Apple Store in Lenox Square Mall in Buckhead, Atlanta. I’m nervous and yet wholly excited if this all works out – I could have some extra income this school year and be able to afford little things here and there, not to mention the Disney trip I want to go with Tricia on this New Year’s… and helping her feel financially secure in Atlanta is a big part of it too. But… Comcast is still a bucket of fail and hasn’t reconnected the phone line they accidently cut (seriously now, who DOESN’T survey land when they dig??) and I have crappy cell coverage at home, so it looks like this phone interview will be done from the seat of my car in a quiet (cell-covered) parking lot…. somewhere.

So my MacBook Pro came in! The same day I got the initially email from Apple, too. XD That was this past Thursday, and I have spent every day loving this beautiful machine. I’ve got it just about entirely set up – the only thing left at this rate is for The Sims 3 to arrive with Splash’s package so I can install it and torture explore the Sims community. Meanwhile, I have the white Macbook all set up to be wiped and reformatted with a fresh install when I sell it to Talon come Thursday when he is paid. I’ll miss it, actually. That computer was a fantastic companion… so to speak.

Egads. Time to work. I’ll try to add to this later, but if I don’t, wish me luck!

Life recently

So, I celebrated my 21st birthday a week ago, which was pretty great. I went to a pub called Brick Store Pub, and I got glass of Arrogant Bastard (oaked) and then Samichlaus (which is 14% alcohol by volume BEER. wtf.). After that, we went to Taco Mac, where I forgot the name of the pitcher of beer we split (8 of us at that point, but only 3 of us split the pitcher), and we got nachos to go with it. I also got a free shot of Jäger for my 21st birthday, courtesy of the restaurant. My friends and fraternity brothers are epic and insisted on buying everything. I even got a Passport Club membership with Taco Mac, where the more beer I try, I get free stuff to go with it – like, eventually, an engraved mug!

After the Jäger things got fuzzy. XD But all in all, a good birthday and I woke up without a hangover. :)

Also, I got a fantastic gift from some friends who pooled money together for me to get a $90 ticket to Cirque Du Soleil’s Kooza show here in Atlantic Station, Atlanta, GA! I’m super psyched, and I’ll be going with 3 others too, so it’ll certainly be a trip! I can’t wait for tonight at 8PM to roll around. :3

Before drinking last week, though, I did apply for a job at the Apple Store that will be opening in my hometown of Augusta, GA, for a full-time position during the summer. I hope that works out in my advantage – I have plans for that money/discount. ;) I would love a new aluminum MacBook. :3

I’m going to try and add more later, but I can’t now. XD

Urban Camping

I assume I wrote a bit tooo much last time to be commented on, indicated by the lack of comments. :P Still, it was a pretty amazing vacation and I had to do it justice.

I feel lazy for not writing between now and the 3rd, but I’ve been a bit tired and busy lately. During the week I picked up a sweet little portable harddrive to back up with Time Machine on my MacBook – 320GB and a vivid blue color. It’s maybe 5″ x 2.5″ x .5″, and was only $120.

I’ve been doing a lot to prepare for today, which was the release of the iPhone 3G. I updated to iTunes 7.7 which introduced the App Store to the iTunes Store, and picked up a few of the free applications for the iPhone: Facebook, AIM, Light (which simply puts the screen to full brightness and turns it white to substitute as a flashlight… c’mon, we’ve all used our phones as flashlights before), PhoneSaber (wave it around and it makes lightsaber noises – too much fun), Pandora, and Remote (an application by Apple that hooks into iTunes to remotely control iTunes from anywhere on the network). Very fun.

Yesterday afternoon was illuminated by rapid lightning and thunder when I left work, and it poooured all afternoon. I decided upon periodically checking with the AT&T store for a line, beginning when I left Stan’s after hanging out for about an hour with Dally and Kao and Tesh. Dally’s still ticklish; therefore I ABUSE. XD We had fun – Cocoa wanted in as well, though, silly puppy.

Well, nothing at 5PM at the store, so I went home and played around both online and in GTA4, getting some dinner while I was at it. 9PM was my next excursion, and this time the ropes were being set out for line formation, yet no one in line yet. I talked to a “Customer Coordinator” and the security guard hired for the night very shortly before leaving for home. This was it, I was going to do it. I got really anxious and decided to grab the folding chair I visited Stan’s for, some water bottles, and an umbrella in case it rained, and headed back around 10PM. I was first. So, I sat in the car for a bit and waited for someone else to arrive so I had a reason to leave my car’s comfort.

This is where the night got… interesting.

A silver Scion xB pulled up next to my car (which is right next to the line formation), and 4 teenage kids got out. Virtually at the same moment, a heavily tattooed man in a t-shirt and gym shorts walking a small… hmm. It was either a small French bulldog or French pug, I forget which he said it was. Anyway, he and his dog joined the teens in line behind me. Turns out only one of the teens was purchasing a phone, the others were there just to hang out. So, essentially, only 3 people were in line at this point.

The kids were the first for the iPhone last year, too. There’s a video of them on Youtube somewhere of that particular launch. I didn’t catch all their names, but I think the one who was getting a phone was named Tanner. The tattooed fellow’s name was Jimmy, and he was a trucker for a company called Bekins. I found Jimmy to be fascinating, honestly. He showed us (us being teenagers and me) his truck (we had an understanding of which places we had in line, so “line standing” was rather casual). The truck was his personally owned tractor trailer, the cab ringing in at about $150K, and the trailer was an additional $70K – he seemed to be doing pretty well for himself, with nice vacations and real estate speculation. I had no idea trucker cabs had beds in the back, either! Coulda fooled me… Told us stories about trucking and how expensive it is to fuel his truck… jeez, 300 gallon tank – $1300 per fillup. @_@

Meanwhile, the only thing the security guard did was sit in her gigantic SUV and watch DVDs and sleep all night. At one point she took off and disappeared for an hour, during which the kids broke out their pot and makeshift bong and puffed away. @_@ I’d never smelled the stuff before. Kinda… just… odd smoke, that’s all really. *shrugs* They didn’t bother me with it, and it wasn’t like it was dangerous or hindersome.

I think the next crew showed up around 3ish? Turns out he stood in line last year with the kids as well! Everyone knew each other, it felt like – Jimmy and I just laughed. Another guy showed up a bit later and throughout the night exclaimed how much better it was this wait than the “Chik-Fil-A” wait he did… The story behind that is that the Chik-Fil-A in front of the new Target here celebrated its grand opening by giving the first 100 customers free Chik-Fil-A for a year. Naturally, he and his girlfriend wanted in line… well, Hurricane Rita hit just then, and he didn’t say too much more about details other than wind, rain, lightning, and misery. Personally I’m not so sure it’s worth it. XD

I tried to sleep a bit throughout the night, but it was humid and as the temperature dropped and the wind blew, everything got surprisingly cold (and damp, naturally, from condensation). I didn’t get much rest, but people were trickling in very sporadically until about 6-7AM, where people started really amassing. I couldn’t help but laugh at the smug elite attitudes of those strolling up supremely to the back of the line at ten til 8AM, assuming they’d get a phone when I full well knew they didn’t have phones for anyone past like…. the 25th person. It just made sense to me that there wouldn’t be many, yknow?

Well, employees came along and after some confusion about whether or not I could do the transaction on my own or get Mom, my account holder, to come down… they began letting us in, me first, at 8AM. And I got my iPhone 3G, 16GB and black and shiny. :3 Turns out I was lucky to be in the front – they only got in 30 (as I had guessed), and it was something like ten 8GB, ten white 16GB, and ten black 16GB. So I got my personal pick without any struggles. After they activated it on the spot (later I heard the Apple iTunes servers for activation failed hardcore, so I was again lucky to be in front), I went home, synced all my goodies back to the phone (iTunes had a backup of my last phone, so no playing with settings again :D), took a shower, and crashed for 9 hours. XD

I had fun! Anyone ever been a complete nerd like me and camp out for a sale or a release of something (movie, game, etc)?
